Don Freeman papers, 1954-1976.

The colllection contains production material, including manuscript and/or illustrative material with an emphasis on the latter, for ten titles published between 1954 and 1976. Manuscript materials include a corrected photocopy typescript, galley proofs,front matter, and a photocopy dummy. Illustrative materials include sketches, studies, and illustrations done in a variety of media, dummies, and paste-ups. The collection also contains some miscellaneous art including sketches, illustrations, proofs, and dummies. Some items are signed for Dr. Irvin Kerlan.

Don Freeman was born August 11, 1908, in San Diego, CA. He attended the Art Students League in New York City for two years. In 1931 he married Lydia Cooley, an art student, and the couple had one son. Don Freeman worked as a freelance artist and as a graphic artist for the New York Times and New York Herald Tribune before beginning to illustrate books in the 1940s.
